California Region Overview
Nicknamed "the Golden State", California is located along the Pacific coast of the United States. It is bordered by Oregon to the north, by Nevada and Arizona to the west, and by Mexico to the south.
The capital of California is Sacramento, and its largest city is Los Angeles. California is the most populous state in the United States, with an estimated population of over 38 million. California is the third largest state by area in the country, with a total of 163,696 square miles (423,970 square kilometers).
California is divided into 58 counties and there are 481 incorporated cities and towns. There are five major metropolitan areas in California, around which most of the states population resides. These metropolitan areas are Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Riverside-San Bernadino, San Diego, and Sacramento.
